From Horse-Drawn Carriages to Horsepower
Discover the world of carriage making and imperial representation, from the Baroque era to the early automobiles.
Details of Your Private Guided Museum Tour:
For centuries, horses and carriages were central to courtly representation. Baroque carriages, designed by renowned artists, were not only means of transport but also symbols of the power and dignity of the imperial family. With technological advancements from the late 18th century onwards, new types of carriages emerged, and the carriage gradually became a more efficient and practical tool for everyday use.
Join me in exploring an impressive collection of historical vehicles, including golden baroque coaches, elegant 19th-century travel and leisure carriages, as well as early automobiles. A special highlight is the golden coronation carriage (“Imperial Coach”), Napoleon's son's golden children's carriage, and the comfortable travel vehicles and playful children's carriages of the Habsburgs.
For Sisi enthusiasts, there’s plenty to discover: In my tour through the Imperial Carriage Museum, you will see the only preserved saddle of Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”), as well as portraits of her beloved horses. These exhibits highlight Sisi’s passion for horseback riding and her place among the best equestrians of her time. Additionally, we’ll see historical harnesses, saddlery, and paintings that provide a comprehensive insight into the courtly culture of carriages and riding.
