#7 Hofburg - Imperial Palace

The Hofburg (Imperial Palace), dating back to the 13th century, was the political center of the Habsburg monarchy until the end of World War I in 1918. Over the centuries, it has been continuously expanded, remodeled, and adapted to meet the changing requirements of the time. The various wings, staircases, and architectural elements reflect the building styles and techniques of their respective periods, making the Hofburg today an impressive ensemble of nearly all architectural eras. Since 1945, it has served as the official residence of the President of Austria.

A Vast Complex Full of Culture and History

The expansive grounds of the Hofburg, spanning around 24 hectares, form a fascinating "universe" in the heart of the city. It includes grand palaces, hidden courtyards, and numerous museums, such as the Imperial Treasury, the Imperial Apartments with the Sisi Museum, the Spanish Riding School, the Weltmuseum Wien, and the Austrian National Library with its State Hall.

The Imperial Treasury – Insignia and Magnificent Treasures

Located in the heart of the Hofburg, the Imperial Treasury houses one of the most important collections in Europe. Visitors can admire the imperial regalia of the Holy Roman Empire, as well as the Austrian imperial coronation insignia. Highlights include the Imperial Crown and the famous treasures of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

Imperial Apartments & Sisi Museum

Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, often admired as the beautiful empress, has long been a cult figure. However, the Sisi Museum in the Hofburg sheds more light on the complex personality behind the legend. The exhibition traces her life - from her carefree youth in Bavaria to her unexpected engagement to Emperor Franz Joseph and her tragic assassination in Geneva in 1898. The restless and yearning life of the empress is impressively portrayed. The Sisi Museum offers an exciting insight into her life that fascinates not only Sisi fans.

Tip!

Curiosities about the Empress

Did you know that at the age of 51, Empress Sisi had an anchor tattooed on her shoulder? She also had an eagle with outstretched wings tattooed on her lower back – an extremely unusual choice for an empress in the 19th century, ahead of her time.

Sisi’s hair care routine was also far from ordinary: she would spend about three hours each day tending to her famous, floor-length hair. After each brushing session, it was her hairdresser, Fanny Feifalik's task, to collect the combed-out hair, count it, and present it to the empress on a silver tray. However, to avoid any trouble, Fanny cleverly hid some of the hair using tape on the inside of her apron.
